The Cimpress Business Analytics (Cimba) team is passionate about data. We are responsible for full data processing flows, from ingestion of raw data streaming from the µservices that make up the Mass Customization Platform (MCP). Cimba works in applying analytic techniques and other classification methodologies, preparing it for ad hoc and visual rendering technologies, making our rich data sets available to drive and enable decision making worldwide.


Cimba uses Looker as the technology of choice for data modeling, data abstraction along with visualization, dashboarding and reporting in addition to leveraging advanced features such as content embedding, API programmatic access. Looker is a next-generation business intelligence and analytics platform.  While it has powerful visualization capability similar to Tableau and Qlikview, it also has a logical data modeling layer utilizing a language called LookML.  When a user executes a dashboard or does ad hoc analysis, Looker generates SQL on the fly using this layer.


We are looking for a highly motivated BI Engineer who thinks outside the box, and who is a bit outside the box - much like Looker itself. The ideal candidate has it all: software engineering skills, a broad familiarity with analytic methods and tools, experience with big data challenges. You will own all aspects of our Looker technology and making it work for our dynamic environment. 


As a Senior BI Engineer, you will be responsible for partnering with business and analytics teams to provide guidance and help in implementation of analytics and reports. You will consult Cimba partners in creating and suggesting best-practices for data modeling and consumption through Looker.


You will become familiar with the concepts of data-sharing and working with Cimba partners in defining what data has value in being shared and consumed based on the myriad datasets used throughout Cimpress. To assist with this, you will have access to next-generation data-catalog tools such as Alation will work with data-catalog tools which are already in place to understand inter-relations and identify ways for augmenting the datasets and models we create.


Your role will involve

  • Partner and work directly with Cimba stakeholders which include Cimpress business units, analysts, data scientists, business users, software developers, Cimba team members, and others to understand their needs and come up with an end to end solution in providing analytic insights primarily through Looker
  • Become a subject matter expert on Looker, both as a development platform and visualization tool
  • Be responsible for owning, developing, managing and maintaining the core Looker data models with specific goal of ensuring high-fidelity modeling
  • Build data expertise within Cimpress and drive adoption of Cimba products. Enable, educate and empower our partners to understand and access data as well as Looker data models efficiently with the goal of enabling self-service consumption
  • Building on the above experience, develop Looker best practices in modeling and design and act as a consultant to Cimba clients on the use of the technology
  • Actively contribute to the Cimba vision of building and launching self-serve analytics products and support a self-service data exploration platform
  • Communicate and collaborate with cross functional teams in the worldwide offices of Cimpress. Collect business requirements and help translating these into specifications and priorities. (English <---> SQL)
  • Anticipate customers’ analytic needs and proactively conceptualize and champion high-value data solutions
  • Hold office hours, organize training sessions, discussion events and more to evangelize Looker’s data modeling capabilities and best practices throughout the company
  • Be responsible for maintaining security and data access models through Looker
  • Own the release process for Looker code, work with the team to manage the Looker environment including software updates


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related technical field
  • Proven ability to write, tune and execute SQL queries
  • 4+ years of professional work experience in an analytics-focused role
  • Experience as a hands-on BI Developer / Analyst working with self-service BI tools such as Looker, Tableau or Qlikview
  • Understanding of concepts such as dimensional data modeling, relational and column store databases
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while having a well-organized, self-starting working method
  • A customer-centric, professional attitude with strong interpersonal and communication skills at different levels with the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and concisely
  • Fluency in English written and spoken

Ideal candidate would have

  • Proficiency and prior experience in Looker highly desirable
  • Functional experience in a scripting language (e.g. Python)
  • Working knowledge of databases either MPP columnar such as Redshift, Snowflake, relational such as Postgres, in-memory such as MemSQL
  • Experience with AWS technologies
  • Interest in DevOps tasks like automating workflows, analyzing usage behaviors to proactively improve health of our services
  • Experience in creating data visualizations using Javascript libraries such as D3
